Reflexology is thought to date back to around 2300bc in Egypt, where in the tomb of Ankhamore, on the walls there are a series of pictures showing what seems to be a foot massage. The ancient Chinese worked on the hands and feet to help maintain good health and prevent disease. They have used the application of pressure as a healing therapy for over 5000 years. In the 16th century, two Europeans doctors published a book on the zone therapy. Later, an American surgeon, Dr William Fitzgerald founded the zone therapy as we know it today through his research and divided the body into 10 zones. In the 30s, Eunice Ingham who is known as “the mother of modern reflexology” dedicated her life to researching and developed the foot charts used today and published two books. Finally, Doreen Bayly, trained with Eunice Ingham will introduced reflexology to the U.K and will in turn train a lot of European reflexology therapists.

Reflexology is a theory and therapy that uses the feet to treat the whole body. It is a gentle, non-invasive therapy that encourages the body to balance and heal itself. It involves applying finger or thumb pressure to specific points on the feet.

These points are called reflexes and they reflect or mirror the organs and structures of the body as well as a person’s emotional health. In this way, the feet are mini maps of the body that encourages holistic healing (mind, body and spirit). It encourages both relaxation and stimulation. It helps the body rebuild its energy and then activates the circulation and the nervous system, making both more efficient and thus benefiting the body as a whole.

The fundamental concept of reflexology is that the feet are mirrors of the body and that through applying direct pressure to specific points on them, the body can be restored to homeostasis (balance of all systems).

Reflexology relieves stress and tension and has a deeply relaxing effect. Circulation is improved, which increases the performance of all organs and cells. It helps release trapped nervous energy and improves neural efficiency, approximately 7000 nerves are stimulated by reflexology massage. It improves waste removal and elimination as well as activates the body’s self-healing.

Reflexology works on the principal that the whole body, from head to toe is connected.

All nerves in the body end in the feet. Hands can be used but feet are more sensitive because they usually are covered by socks and shoes.

First reflexology cannot cause the spread of the disease and will not increase the elimination of chemotherapy drugs.

What reflexology can do is offer emotional support, assist sleep, help with constipation, relieve nausea, and reduce stress levels…

With a balanced diet, reflexology helps eliminate toxins in the body, reduces stress and helps balance the hormonal system that allows the body to work better as a whole and in particular reproductive organs and hormones.

Reflexology can be used safely during pregnancy, labour and post pregnancy. It is non-intrusive therapy that relaxes the mother to be and gives her a space to discuss her pregnancy. It helps reduce morning sickness, heartburn, indigestion, constipation. It also helps relieve aches and pains, insomnia and anxiety. It helps maintain optimum health throughout pregnancy prepares and balances the body and all its systems, especially the endocrine system that governs pregnancy and labour process.

Reflexology is a holistic therapy that treats a person rather than a disease and every treatment involves a through working of all reflexes. However, by reworking throughout a course of treatments, some reflexes that are out of balance or congested, reflexology can be used to treat all type of disorders such as arthritis, rheumatism, osteoporosis, migraine, epilepsy, pain, diabetes, sciatica, sinusitis and many more.
