Indian head massage is a massage technique based on old Ayurvedic practices, traditionally used in the homes by mother and wives to treat their children and husbands. Champi is the Indian word for head massage.

It is a holistic therapy incorporating mind, body and spirit. The treatment has been practised in India for over a thousand years, originally to keep hair in beautiful condition by stimulating blood flow to the scalp, the nourishing the hair roots. They combined them with oils to keep their hair in good condition. Originally it was almost exclusively a massage of the head and hair follicles but over time it incorporated massage and manipulation of the face, scalp, neck, upper back, shoulders and upper arms.

The aim of Indian head massage is to release the stress that has accumulated in the tissues, muscles and joints of the head, face, neck and shoulders. Acting on a physical, mental and subtle level, it stimulates the important energy centres (crown, third eye and throat chakras), so helping to maintain the important balance of energy within the body, which in return promotes a sense of wellbeing, positive energy and relaxation.

By relaxing muscle and nerve fibres, it relieves tension, pain and fatigue. It increases oxygen supply to the brain, aiding clarity of thought and concentration and relieving mental strain. It stimulates endorphin release, helping natural pain relief and increasing feelings of wellbeing. The nervous systems are calmed, slowing heart rate and reducing stress and promoting restful sleep. It is an antidote to stress, anxiety and mental tension, clears the mind and revitalizes mental capacity. It improves blood flow to the head and neck that enhances nourishment to the muscles that can promote hair growth. It helps with eyestrain, headaches, sinusitis, congestion and insomnia.
